Curtains Up! The Musical Highlights in Vienna in 2026
“The streets of Vienna are paved with culture. The streets of other cities with asphalt,” once remarked Austrian writer Karl Kraus. Vienna is known for its opera houses, historic theaters, and ballet stages. It comes as no surprise, then, that the city is also a renowned musical capital.
A look at this year’s program is well worth it: From Maria Theresia at the Ronacher to a Disney spectacle in autumn, we’ll show you which sensations to look forward to during Vienna’s 2026 musical season—including insider tips to round off a perfect musical evening.
Current Highlights: What You Need to See Right Now
The Phantom of the Opera at Raimund Theater
The original production is already considered one of the most visited musicals in the world. With The Phantom of the Opera, Vienna proved that it can present global musical hits at the highest level. Cameron Mackintosh’s impressive new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s work has been extended at Vienna’s Raimund Theater due to overwhelming audience demand. This blockbuster can still be experienced in Vienna until June 2026.
Maria Theresia – The Musical at Ronacher
The homegrown epic about the legacy of the Archduchess of Austria and Queen of Hungary and Bohemia, Maria Theresia – The Musical, at the Ronacher is a must for fans of historical stories. Due to high demand, the production has been extended for another season in 2026/27.
tick, tick… BOOM! at Volksoper
The musical tick, tick… BOOM! at Vienna’s Volksoper has been described in many reviews as a “rejuvenation treatment” for musical theater. Fans of contemporary stories will feel right at home among the rock songs and neon lights. Originally conceived as a musical monologue by Jonathan Larson, it was adapted by Netflix after his sudden death and is now enjoying great success on stage this season.
Preview: The Major Disney Musical This Autumn
In 2026, musical fans can look forward to a special highlight: Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is returning to the Austrian capital. The musical adaptation is based on the world-famous Disney animated film and tells the story of Belle and the prince who was transformed into a beast. Advance ticket sales at Raimund Theater are already open. Anyone who doesn’t want to miss this nostalgic spectacle should secure tickets early, as high demand is expected.
Short Guest Performances & Galas (Stadthalle & MQ)
In addition to the major venues, short guest performances and gala shows offer plenty of variety. In April and May 2026, for example, Hallelujah! SISTER ACT – THE HEAVENLY MUSICAL will be performed at Stadthalle Wien, while touring productions such as Pretty Woman will appear at MuseumsQuartier—perfect for musical fans looking to experience new formats alongside long-running favorites. From 2027 onward, Vienna will gain another venue: the new musical theater Theater im Prater, with 1,800 seats, is set to open in Wurstelprater.
Companion Insider Tips for the Perfect Evening
Once you’ve immersed yourself in the music, you won’t want your musical evening to end just yet. Fortunately, there are ways to extend the experience:
Backstage Tours: Both the Ronacher and Raimund Theater regularly offer exclusive tours. Those who want to peek behind the scenes can learn all about stage design, technical production, and the work of the performers.
